«One of the reasons you burn less calories when you lose weight is because you

become more efficient performing your activities of daily living.  In other words, you burn less calories for the exact same movement, and this decrease in calorie burn is greater than you would expect based on the weight loss alone.  This increase in efficiency is accompanied by

changes in enzyme activity in your muscles, as your muscles try to get more “bang for the buck”.  In essence, your body is trying to conserve energy, which makes it very easy to regain weight.

There are two ways to counteract this. The first is a deliberate and conscious effort to dramatically increase your overall movement and NEAT** levels during the day…. The other way is to engage in more high intensity exercise (particularly interval training), as the efficiency effect disappears at higher exercise intensities.  Certainly, our bodies don’t help us when it comes to maintaining long term weight loss, but by taking these steps, we can help make the process easier.»

** NEAT: Non-exercise activity thermogenesis» – Aktivitet utenom trening, som gåturer, spontane bevegelser i hverdagen osv.
